Dare To Be Different

“In order to be irreplaceable, one must always be different.”

-Coco Chanel,  Fashion Designer and Founder of the Chanel Brand

Anyone who knows me is aware of the fact that I am a fan of color.  My love of color not only applies to clothes, shoes and accessories but also to coats. For many years I have been anti-black when it comes to fall/winter outerwear. Ok so I still have a couple of coats in the color of night; the classic black leather jacket that never goes out of style and a fancy full length coat with a fur collar (always makes me feel like a superstar).  However the last few coats I purchased were either fuchsia or red. I enjoy stepping on the elevator at the office in the morning and being the bright star in a sea of black and gray. More importantly I enjoy being different. I’m an individual so why should I look like everyone else? Color also affects my mood in a positive way; it puts a spring in my step.  Who doesn’t feel happy wearing the color of sunshine versus a gray and dreary day?

Okay. So I get that after my color commentary (pun intended) some of you are still anti-color. You identify more with the colorless, monochromatic and neutral looks of Angelina Jolie and Kimye (that’s Kim Kardashian and Kanye West for those not in the know). This is perfectly fine because being true to yourself is most important. If the thought of wearing a yellow coat makes you break out in hives or gives you the shakes, you should not do it. However what you can focus on are the details. Look for coats that feature interesting prints or patterns like hounds tooth, non-traditional necklines/collars, leather sleeves, asymmetrical lines or other details that make you stand out from the crowd. If you are feeling adventurous you could set off your coat with leather gloves in a color or animal print.

Each of us is unique and different in terms of our body types and personalities; why should our coats be any different? So which colors or styles are you considering for this cold weather season? Leave a comment and let me know.
